hNÝTA : DEADSTOCK PROJECT
I am proud to have been chosen as the winner of The Deadstock Project by Missoma, an initiative that transforms unused and surplus materials into unique, sustainable pieces. This project aligns perfectly with my commitment to environmentally conscious design.
My project, “Hnýta”, is inspired by various ways in which ancient armours were tied and knotted in the V&A. This fascination for the knots in the armour led me to explore and investigate knitting to express the details and forms of the knots.
Knitting is a huge part of Icelandic culture and it gave me was a new way of exploring the materials from the dead stock from Missoma. Knitting was also an important part of my upbringing, from learning the techniques in school to watching my mother knit every evening. It is now a part of my relationship with my mother, sister and friends. To this day, I have knitting evenings with my mother and sister as a way to be connected in our busy lives and to do something that we all enjoy.
For my designs, I experimented with various stitches, which has been used in knitting for centuries. I designed various objects like bags, necklaces, collars, gloves through different knitting techniques. Hnýta has the potential to be explored in multiple directions and pathways, each of which in my eyes can become successful designs, The beauty of Missoma’s knitted chains shines through each one of them.
